The Colchester East Hants Health Centre is among six hospitals getting upgrades to improve the space used to train family medicine residents.

The province says infrastructure funding of $3.15 million will help finish the work being done to accommodate new family residents in New Glasgow, Truro, Amherst, Antigonish, and Inverness.

The work varies in each location, from renovating or creating space for training, adding a room for residents to stay when they are on call, furniture, or technology.

The province says work is underway in those locations.

Government says the funding will also allow for construction of a new building next to the Valley Regional Hospital in Kentville, with a tender expected to be issued in a few months.

In 2018, government announced ten new family medicine residency spaces as part of Dalhousie University's Family Medicine Residency Training Program.

Family medicine training sites are located in Truro, Amherst, New Glasgow, Sydney, Inverness, the Annapolis Valley, South West Nova, and Halifax.
