Fire north of Pink Mountain burns over 500 hectares

A wildfire north of Pink Mountain has burnt the most hectares of any fire so far in the northeast zone this year.

The B.C. Wildfire Centre reported the blaze on the north side of the Sikanni River started on Friday. As of Monday the fire is being held, but has burnt 545 hectares as of Monday morning.

The wildfire near Sikanni Chief Provincial Park has burnt the majority of the 771 hectares damaged by blazes across the fire zone in 2022. Throughout the province, 148 fires have burnt 1241 hectares in 2022.

However, the risk of wildfires has dropped following a wet weekend. While the risk remains high in a small part of the northeast, most of the region is under very low to moderate daily danger ratings as of Sunday.
