Missing tubers found safe after search of Belledune woods

The RCMP says a group of tubers who had become stranded in the Belledune area have been found safe.

Officers responded around 11:30 p.m., Monday, to a report that five people had not returned from a tubing activity down Jacquet River.

Investigators say the group began a tubing descent of the river around 1 p.m. and when they came to a shallower section of river a few hours later, they decided to get out of the water and continue downstream on foot, but became disoriented in the woods.

They were reported missing by a family member when they did not return that evening, and were located around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The RCMP says the group was able to remain in contact with RCMP telecommunication operators throughout the search, and started a small fire while they waited for help to arrive.

There were no injuries reported.
