Canada's Governor General is planning to visit five communities on the West Coast in the next four days.

Julie Payette will make stops in New Westminster and Vancouver, before hopping over to Vancouver Island to visit Victoria, Nanaimo and Comox.

She'll take part in an official welcoming ceremony at Government House at 5:30 Saturday afternoon.

Sunday morning at 10:30, the former Canadian astronaut will take an 8-kilometer spin downtown with 60 members of the Greater Victoria Bike to Work Society.

Society Executive Director Amelia Potvin says the Govenor General's crew reached out to them: "It's part of a new initiative of the Governor General's program office called GG Active."

Also while in Victoria this weekend, the Governor General will also present a Member of the Order of Canada medal to University of Victoria law professor and author Roger Philip Kerans.

On Monday, she's expected to head up island to visit 19 Wing and CFB Comox.
