New Year baby arrives in the midnight hour


The first baby born in a hospital on Vancouver Island in 2019 arrived at 00:42 a.m. at Victoria General Hospital. The boy weighed 7 pounds, 12 ounces. His family is from the Cowichan Valley. Mom and babe are healthy but tired following the overnight delivery. The baby's name is Maverick and he has a sister who is 5 years old. Maverick felt the "need for speed," arriving eight days before his due date.

The North Island's first baby of the New Year was born at the North Island Hospital Campbell River campus at 2:06 am. He weighed 7 pounds, 8 ounces. His family is from Alert Bay.

BC's first out of the shute made his entrance to the world at 12:01 a.m. weighing 8 pounds 3 ounces at Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster.

An estimated 999 babies will be born in Canada on New Year's Day, according to UNICEF.

Approximately 350-thousand babies will be born in this country in the next 365 days.
