Prison Violence Rally slated for Friday

Saying they put their lives at risk every day, BC correctional officers are planning a protest outside of the Vancouver Island Regional Correctional Centre on Wilkinson Road at 10 Friday morning.

The demonstration is to draw attention to the increasing number of violent incidents against correctional officers across the province.

Overcrowding and understaffing is a growing problem. Prior to 2001, the inmate-to-staff ratio was capped at 20:1. The ratio is now as high as 72:1
