Saanich police taped off a section of a Royal Oak street as they investigated a suspicious package Friday afternoon.

Police shut down the 4500-block of Chatterton Way in both directions around 4 p.m., asking drivers to detour using Royal Oak Drive.

Saanich police said Saturday morning that the road remained closed until about 2 a.m., by which time the package had been removed.

With the help of the Greater Victoria Emergency Response team, police determined that the package was not an explosive device.

The 4500 block of Chatterton Way was reopened around 2am this morning to traffic after the package, determined by the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team to not be an explosive, was removed. The file remains under investigation.
