UVic announces federal money to turn former Queenswood property into research hub
The University of Victoria and the federal government is investing a combined $7 million for a new ocean and climate research hub.
The former Queenswood property in Gordon Head is getting refurbished for office and research space.
John Aldag, MP for Cloverdale-Langley announced $4.5 million from the Government of Canada.
“It’s an investment in science, particularly with the oceans research,” said Aldag. “It’s looking at everything from the effects of climate change it will happen on the islands and our coastal communities. It’s looking at the risks from earthquakes and tsunamis and changes to the oceans and what that will mean for biodiversity and what that will mean for the planet’s future.”
UVic and other universities are contributing the rest of the renovations money.
$3 million of federal and university money is going to Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre operating out on the west coast.
This contribution from the federal government follows a $46.6 grant it made to U-Vic for its Ocean Networks Canada work.
