A Montreal man has filed a request for a class-action lawsuit against tech giant Apple claiming the company has a policy of planned obsolescence for the IPhone 5 and IPhone 6.

Simon St-Onge says a recent update not only slowed the functions of his IPhone 5, but also made it difficult to use a number of programs such as email, text messaging and the address book.

St-Onge tells the Journal de Montreal that Apple should have informed customers that downloading the IOS 10 and IOS 11 updates would cause problems for older model IPhones.

He also claims that reversing the updates and reverting to the previous operating system has proven to be a near impossible task.

The suit seeks financial compensation but does not set a figure.

In addition it asks Apple to offer every affected client an IPhone 8 or newer model phone as part of any compensation package.
