Name of new café on St Denis is attracting attention in light of Bonjour-Hi debate
Quebec's minister for the French language says he hopes to ban use of the bilingual greeting "Bonjour-Hi" in the province.
Now, a Montreal business owner is betting his new café's name will cause a stir in Quebec City.
"This guy comes in and he makes this big scene - in French - about 'we don't use "bonjour-hi" ici", said Chef Dave Plant and owner of popular "Bouffe Dave Plant Food" on de Mainsoneuve street, who's been welcoming customers bilingually for years.
He's almost ready to open a second eatery on St-Denis street.
"One staff joked we should just call it 'Bonjour-Hi', said Plant.
That's exactly what they've done and Plant calls the latest language flap "political drama," adding, "the key is to have staff that are bilingual."
Café Bonjour / Hi is expected to open in early November.
