One COVID-19 death, 26 positive cases at Maple Leaf plants in Montreal and Laval
A worker at the Maple Leaf meat products plant in Montreal has died of COVID-19.
There are 24 COVID positive cases at the plant and two at their Laval plant.
The worker at the Montreal North Viau plant died April 19. He worked there since July 2017.
Maple Leaf foods told CJAD 800 operations were suspended at the Montreal North Viau plant for a few days last month while investigating the case and to do a deep cleaning before reopening. Operations continued meantime at the Laval plant.
Of the 24 cases at the Montreal plant, one remains in hospital and the others either recovered or are recovering.
The company said in its statement that "it's been in close contact with public health officials and it follows Center for Disease Control guidelines" to ensure workplace and public health safety.
The company said its Montreal North workers "tend to live in communities hard hit by COVID 19 and that likely contributed to the cases."
Maple Leaf Foods said it's been regularly publishing COVID-19 updates on its website - the last one was on May 8.
