OTTAWA - A massive fire has sent one man to hospital and knocked out power to 9,000 customers in Ottawa’s west end.

Ottawa Fire says a commercial vehicle rolled on Moodie Drive at Bride Private around 7 a.m. and hit a gas line, which sparked the fire.

Officials initially said the vehicle was a cement truck, but a police spokesman at the scene said it was a commercial vehicle with a large crane on top.

The driver of the vehicle, a man in his 50s, was taken to hospital in serious but stable condition, He suffered burns to his face and hands.

Scott Peddle was just beginning his day as a school bus driver when he saw the vehicle tip over and phoned 911.

"The truck just fell right over onto its side and as soon as it hit the side, it was on fire - huge, huge fire" Peddle said.

Peddle said the man in the truck was able to climb out on his own. He then sat with Peddle on his school bus until emergency officials arrived.
