Elks coach Elizondo goes with rookie Cornelius, vet Prukop in rematch with Bombers

Edmonton Elks quarterback Taylor Cornelius (15) throws the ball past the arm of Ottawa Redblacks defensive lineman Cleyon Laing (90) during first half CFL football action in Ottawa on Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2021 (The Canadian Press/Justin Tang).

Jamie Elizondo is making a quarterback change.

The Edmonton head coach told reporters Monday rookie Taylor Cornelius will make the start Friday when the Elks (2-6) host the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (8-1).

Elizondo also said veteran Dakota Prukop will be Edmonton's backup.

That means incumbent Trevor Harris won't play for Edmonton.

Harris returned to Edmonton's active roster last week after missing two contests with a neck injury.

But Harris was just 9-of-22 passing for 87 yards in Edmonton's 30-3 loss to Winnipeg last Friday night.
