It can be a challenge to keep one’s rock fan cred during the holiday season, when we’re bombarded with festive music and carols.
Coming to the rescue last weekend were the Foo Fighters, who delivered a little Christmas mashup during their appearance on SNL.
Dave Grohl and company rocked out “Christmas, Baby Please Come Home” and threw in “Linus and Lucy” – the familiar instrumental from the Peanuts holiday special.
The Foo Fighters, of course, aren’t the only ones to put a rock spin on Christmas music. Here are 6 other acts that have made yule cool:
Canada’s favourite rock star did his version of Chuck Berry’s 1958 reindeer track in 1987.
This rollicking version of the familiar holiday tune was featured on the 1987 album A Very Special Christmas. Fun fact: That’s Mellencamp’s daughter Teddi singing at the end of the video.
This 1977 song is about a department store Santa who gets beaten up by poor kids who’d rather have money than toys.
Petty contributed this catchy holiday song to the 1992 album A Very Special Christmas 2, which raised funds for the Special OIympics.
The Boss first recorded his version of this holiday favourite in 1975 but it wasn’t released until 1985. See also: "Merry Christmas Baby."
We’ve saved the best for last. Love’s been belting out this track since 1963. The original recording featured Cher on backing vocals and Sonny Bono on percussion.
