Black Panther director Ryan Coogler has signed on to produce a new film from Universal focused on the music of Prince.
Described as a "jukebox musical," the film is set to feature a number of songs by the late musician, five years after Universal acquired the rights to his catalogue.
Bryan Edward Hill (Titans, Ash vs The Evil Dead) has written the script, however, it is will not be a Prince biopic, but a story inspired by him.
Other producers attached to the film include Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian, along with Universal Music Publishing Group chair Jody Gerson and Proximity Media’s Rebecca Cho, who serves as an executive producer.
The untitled project is the second Prince-related feature on the way. A new stage adaptation of his 1984 Oscar-winning film, Purple Rain, is also headed to Broadway.
The stage version of Albert Magnoli and William Blinn's screenplay is being written by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, who is behind the current Broadway triumph, Appropriate. The musical will be directed by Tony-nominated Lileana Blain-Cruz, best known for her work on The Skin of Our Teeth.
