American Idol is coming back.
ABC announced Tuesday morning that it has acquired rights to the competition series, which ended a 15-season run on Fox last year.
The show produced winners like Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood and made stars out of non-winners like Adam Lambert and Jennifer Hudson — but declined in ratings and influence as the seasons went on (quick, name the season 15 winner).
The ever-changing panel of judges included Jennifer Lopez, Nicki Minaj, Mariah Carey, Keith Urban, and Steven Tyler.
Disney-ABC co-chairman Ben Sherman promised “a bigger, bolder and better-than-ever Idol” but offered no details on judges or a host. (Ryan Seacrest recently became co-host of Live with Kelly and Ryan, a show owned by Disney-ABC.)
ABC has tried unsuccessfully to have a hit music competition series: 2012’s Duets and 2014’s Rising Star each lasted only one season.
The network’s 2006 show The One: Making a Music Star, hosted by Canada’s George Stroumboulopoulos, was cancelled after only four episodes.
