It was exactly one year ago this week that Adele debuted the video for "Hello," the first single off her third studio album, 25.
The video went online on Oct. 22, 2015, only hours ahead of the release of the single.
Filmed in a rural area not far from Montreal over four days in September 2015, the video was directed by homegrown filmmaker Xavier Dolan.
It smashed a record held by Taylor Swift's "Bad Blood" by garnering over 27.7 million views in the first 24 hours. It also broke a Vevo record for the shortest time to reach 100 million views -- previously held by Miley Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball."
After only 88 days, the "Hello" video had reached 1 billion views. Last May, it became only the third video ever on YouTube to earn 10 million "likes."
The video for the song earned seven nominations at the MTV Video Music Awards, including Video of the Year, Female Video and Pop Video. Dolan was up for Best Direction and Best Editing and fellow Canadians André Turpin and Colombe Raby were nominated for Best Cinematography and Best Art Direction respectively.
On its one-year anniversary, the video has been viewed more than 1.7 billion times. That works out to 4.8 million times a day!
A lot of those video views were by Canadians, of course. This year, Adele performed eight sold-out concerts in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal in front of nearly 124,000 fans.
Those shows grossed $17.8 million (all figures in Canadian funds), according to Boxscore.
Adele played two shows at the Bell Centre in Montreal (Sept. 30 and Oct. 1) for 32,155 fans and grossed $4.5 million. Her four concerts at Toronto’s Air Canada Centre (Oct. 3, 4, 6, 7) — in front of a total of 62,653 fans — grossed a little under $9 million.
And, back in July, Adele grossed $4.3 million from 29,000 fans on two nights at Rogers Arena in Vancouver.
