Singer-songwriter Alec Benjamin has apologized for daring to inject a little humour into the lives of BTS fans.
Last weekend, the Korean pop group streamed concerts, fan events and other content on its YouTube channel as part of what it called Bang Bang Con. The virtual gathering garnered more than 50 million views.
Benjamin took to Twitter to poke fun at the name of the event.
“Just tuned into bang bang con,” he wrote. “it’s amazing but putting my pants back on because i was expecting something else.
“bang bang con really does sound like some porno convention they’d have at the LA convention center.”
As the BTS ARMY went into fighting mode, Benjamin tweeted: “yo wait so is bang bang con not a porno?” The hashtag “#AlecBenjaminIsOverParty” started trending as Benjamin was under attack.
“it’s amazing the kind of things people will say or do to another human being while under the cloak of relative anonymity,” he opined. “it’s truly unbelievable.”
Benjamin deleted the tweets and, on Tuesday, shared: “I am very sorry and I love you and I did not mean to hurt any feelings. Hope you can understand and find it in your heart to forgive me.”
Last year, Benjamin told iHeartRadio.ca he had mixed feelings about using social media. “It’s scary in a lot of ways. Social media empowers people but definitely has some side effects that aren’t so good,” he admitted.
“One of the advantages is you can reach people [but] It definitely has an effect on brainwaves and stuff – that’s a fact.”
