Canada’s Alessia Cara was among the Grammy Awards nominees announced Tuesday morning.
The 21-year-old Ontario singer is up against Khalid, Lil Uzi Vert, Julia Michaels and SZA for Best New Artist and shares a nomination for Song of the Year and Best Music Video for her Logic and Khalid collaboration “1-800-273-8255.”
Cara is also nominated in the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance category for “Stay” with Zedd.
These are the first Grammy noms for Cara.
Also making a Grammy debut is Toronto's Daniel Caesar, whose Freudian earned a nod in the Best R&B Album category and track “Get You," featuring Kali Uchis, is up for Best R&B Performance.
Fellow Canadian Justin Bieber also got a Song of the Year nod as one of six writers of the remix of Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee hit “Despacito.”
They’re up against JAY-Z’s “4:44,” Julia Michaels’ “Issues” and Bruno Mars’ “That’s What I Like” in the category.
“Despacito” is also up for Record of the Year, against “Redbone” by Childish Gambino, “The Story of O.J.” by JAY-Z, “HUMBLE.” by Kendrick Lamar and “24K Magic” by Bruno Mars – as well as Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.
Other Canadians making the Grammy cut this year are Michael Bublé and Sarah McLachlan for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album, and the late Leonard Cohen Best Rock Performance (“You Want It Darker") and Best American Roots Performance (“Steer Your Way"). B.C. resident Alex Cuba's Lo Único Constante earned him a nom for Best Latin Pop Album.
The Weeknd's album Starboy is up for Urban Contemporary Album and Arcade Fire's Everything Now is vying for Best Alternative Music Album.
Northern Cree's Miyo Kekisepa, Make A Stand is nominated for Best Regional Roots Album.
The soundtrack to the Canadian musical Come From Away is nominated in the Best Musical Theatre Album category – earning Canadian composers David Hein and Irene Sankoff their first Grammy nods. Fellow Canadian Ryan Gosling is nominated as one of the artists featured on the La La Land soundtrack, which is up for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media.
Album of the Year nominees include Childish Gambino (Awaken, My Love!), JAY-Z (4:44), Kendrick Lamar (DAMN.), Lorde (Melodrama) and Bruno Mars (24K Magic).
The Grammys will be handed out Jan. 28 in New York City.
