Arcade Fire was on stage in Toronto on Sunday when a gunman went on a rampage about 13 km away, killing two and wounding a dozen others.
"We just got off stage tonight in Toronto and heard the news about the shooting on Danforth," the band tweeted. "Sending all our love to those affected."
Steven Page, who co-wrote the Barenaked Ladies hit "The Old Apartment" more than two decades ago, started a tweet Monday morning with a lyric from the song. “This is where we used to live. For 25 years. And it’s where my kids live. What an awful, violent year for Toronto. #Danforth"
Singer Jann Arden simply tweeted "Toronto" and a broken heart emoji. Rapper Classified was at a loss for words. "So sad to hear what happen in Toronto," he tweeted. "Don’t even know what to say."
Grammy-nominated producer and Wiz Khalifa manager Will Dzombak wrote on Twitter: "Toronto – just touched down. Awful what happened earlier :-/ Send some prayers up."
Canadian actor Patrick J. Adams, who recently left his role on the Toronto-shot series Suits, also shared his thoughts on Twitter. "Another night of senseless loss and brutality in my home town. Praying that some of these reported injuries from the shooting don’t turn into fatalities. Thank you to all the officers and doctors working hard tonight to deal with the aftermath. #danforth"
William Shatner, a Montreal native, posted "Sending good thoughts to the people of Danforth!" on Twitter.
"A few years ago I chose to move to the east end of Toronto, first to East York and then the beach," tweeted actor Jay Baruchel. "Every day I've been reminded why I made that choice. I truly love it here. What happened on the Danforth last night was ugly, opportunistic barbarism. Toronto can and will endure."
Another homegrown star, actress Laura Vandervoort, called the shooting "another senseless shooting." She tweeted: "Heart broken to hear about the #Danforth shooting this morning. My love and condolences to the victims and their families. Praying those injured are able to recover not only physically but emotionally."
Trailer Park Boys actor Jonathan Torrens shared: "Oh no Toronto. This is devastating and infuriating. Hold each other close, now more than ever. The rest of Canada is sending superhuman strength." Fellow Canadian actor Eric Johnson tweeted: "My heart is in Toronto today with all the victims and their families. Tough summer for such an amazing city. Thank you to all the first responders who rush to our help."
Australian actor Nicholas Hamilton, who spent time in Toronto playing Henry Bowers in the movie It, tweeted: "Waking up to the awful #Toronto news is sickening. So many friends there right now. Can’t imagine the mess I’d be rn if any of them were involved. Thinking of everyone."
Caissie Levy, who stars in Frozen on Broadway, shared: "Hard to find words about the gun violence in Toronto. Truly heartbroken."
Olympian Hayley Wickenheiser tweeted simply "Oh Toronto" with emojis of a broken heart and sad face. Jonathan Scott of The Property Brothers used the same emojis in a tweet. "Toronto I’m standing with you today," he wrote.
Blue Jays player Marcus Stroman shared: "Prayers for everyone involved with the shooting in Toronto last night. This gun violence needs to stop man. We need more life, not less!" Toronto FC player Justin Morrow tweeted: "Thoughts & prayers go out to the victims of this tragedy. This great city of Toronto will stand strong but we need to put an end to these acts of violence!"
