Arkells on Saturday broke a record Saturday for the most wins in the Group of the Year category at the JUNO Awards.
The Hamilton, Ont. band took the title for the sixth time – beating a record held by Blue Rodeo since 2018.
It is the third year in a row Arkells have won the award, putting them in a tie with Blue Rodeo and Loverboy for most consecutive wins.
As it turned out, the whole group wasn’t at the ceremony in Edmonton to accept the JUNO.
“We played St. John’s, NL last night & all the flights off the rock were cancelled except one,” Arkells explained in a tweet on Saturday. “There were only three seats left on the flight so we drew straws. We dedicate this award to our bandmates Tony & Nick who are drinking on George St.”
Toronto’s The Sadies won the JUNO for Adult Alternative Album of the Year for Colder Streams, their last release with singer and guitarist Dallas Good, who died a little over a year ago.
Otherness by Ontario’s Alexisonfire was named Rock Album of the Year and Synchro Anarchy by veteran Quebec band VOIVOD won Metal/Hard Album of the Year. Alvvays from PEI picked up the JUNO for Alternative Album the Year for Blue Rev.
Monday night's JUNOs broadcast will include the induction of Nickelback into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.
