Beastie Boys Michael “Mike D” Diamond and Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz said recently they had no idea Eminem copied the cover art of their 1986 album Licensed to Ill for his new album Kamikaze.
“I got maybe 10 text messages, 20 text messages. And I’m like, why do I all of a sudden have like 50 text messages? I better see what’s going on,” Diamond told George Stroumboulopoulos. “Everybody’s forwarding me the album cover from, like, the Twitter feed, or whatever.
“So, that’s how we found out about it.”
Diamond and Horovitz – who are promoting their forthcoming memoir Beastie Boys Book – don’t seem bothered by the homage.
“I don’t know him,” Horovitz said of Eminem. “I met him once in a bathroom in Rome.”
