Billie Eilish has been publicly outed by Variety magazine, after making an appearance at its annual "Hitmakers" event this past weekend.
Eilish was the cover star of Variety's "Power of Women" issue, where in her interview she revealed, “I’ve never really felt like I could relate to girls very well. I love them so much. I love them as people. I’m attracted to them as people. I’m attracted to them for real.”
On the red carpet Saturday (December 2), Eilish was asked by a Variety reporter if she had planned on coming out in the story.
“No I didn’t,” Eilish responded, looking uncomfortable. “But I kind of thought, ‘Wasn’t it obvious’? I didn’t realize people didn’t know. I just don’t really believe in it. I’m just like, ‘Why can’t we just exist’? I’ve been doing this for a long time, and I just didn’t talk about it. Whoops.”
“But I saw the article, and I was like, ‘Oh I guess I came out today.’ OK cool," Eilish continued. "It’s exciting to me because I guess people didn’t know, but it’s cool that they know.” She added: “I am for the girls.”
Last night (December 3), however, Eilish posted a reaction to the incident on Instagram, appearing disappointed in how Variety handled the situation. She writes, "thanks variety for my award and for also outing me on a red carpet at 11 am instead of talking about anything else that matters i like boys and girls leave me alone about it please literally who cares stream “what was i made for”"
Eilish has kept a low profile in regards to her sexuality. Earlier this year in an interview with Elle, she was vocal about how she felt she was treated for the way she dresses or who she dates. “Or my sexuality!” she said. “Like, oh yeah, that’s everyone else’s business, right? No. Where’s that energy with men?”
