Billie Eilish did an Instagram purge this week, unfollowing all 600 or so accounts she had previously followed.
The 18-year-old singer, who has nearly 65 million followers on the platform, has not publicly addressed her decision. She could be taking a cue from mega stars like Beyoncé and Adele who don’t follow anyone on Instagram.
Among the accounts Eilish dumped are those belonging to stars like Justin Bieber and her brother, FINNEAS.
Some fans claim Eilish shared – and then deleted – an Instagram Story in which she wrote: “If I am following your abuser, DM ME & I will unfollow them. I support you.” A screen shot of the purported message was shared on Twitter but has not been verified as legitimate.
Eilish has frequently spoken up about her distaste for social media. In a recent interview with British GQ, the singer said: “I don’t watch people’s [Instagram] Stories, I quit Twitter a couple of years ago, I look at the occasional meme and I feel bad that I don’t post more, as the fans want it, but I have nothing to post. Honestly. Zip.”
