A collection of Bob Dylan memorabilia, including personal letters, photos, unpublished lyrics and interview recordings, brought in a total of $646,000 at auction last week.
The items, kept by Dylan’s longtime friend and harmonica player Tony Glover, were discovered by his widow Cynthia Nadler in their Minnesota home.
R.R. Auction in Boston said most of the items were purchased by one bidder it declined to identify.
In a 1971 recorded conversation, Dylan explained that he changed his name from Robert Zimmerman due to anti-Semitism. He also revealed that his wrote “Lay Lady Lay” for Barbra Streisand.
Lyrics written by Dylan after visiting folk icon Woody Guthrie in 1962 read: "My eyes are cracked I think I been framed / I can’t seem to remember the sound of my name / What did he teach you I heard someone shout / Did he teach you to wheel & wind yourself out / Did he teach you to reveal, respect, and repent the blues / No Jack he taught me how to sleep in my shoes."
