Brandy says she is alive today because of her daughter.
“If Sy'rai wasn’t here, I wouldn't be either,” she told People. “The place that I was in, it just felt like I wasn't going to make it through.”
The 41-year-old singer and actress revealed she contemplated suicide following a failed a relationship and after she was involved in a fatal car accident in 2006.
“I remember laying in bed super depressed,” she shared. “I [told] myself, ‘So, you're just going to go out like this? That's wack. You have a daughter. If you can't do it for yourself, do it for her because this is not the way to leave a mark in her life.’”
Brandy explained therapy has helped her deal with mental health issues. “I'm in a place now where I can be proud of moving in the right direction,” she said.
Her new album B7 includes a track titled “Bye Bipolar” (Brandy said she has not been diagnosed with the disorder) and “Borderline” is about the impact of unrequited love on mental health.
