Brian Wilson, the leader and genius behind the Beach Boys, is suffering from dementia and is reportedly no longer able to care for himself.
According to newly filed court documents obtained by The Daily Mail, longtime representatives for the 81-year-old have petitioned a court to appoint them as his co-conservators, following the passing of Wilson's wife and manager, Melinda Ledbetter, last month.
In a statement, Wilson's business manager, LeeAnn Hard, and publicist, Jean Sievers, said it is their “intent to ensure that all of Mr. Wilson’s daily living needs are satisfied and he has the best possible care while remaining in his home.”
Wilson's family issued a statement supporting the move, saying, "Following the passing of Brian’s beloved wife Melinda, after careful consideration and consultation among Brian, his seven children, Gloria Ramos and Brian's doctors (and consistent with family processes put in place by Brian and Melinda), we are confirming that longtime Wilson family representatives LeeAnn Hard and Jean Sievers will serve as Brian’s co-conservators of the person."
"This decision was made to ensure that there will be no extreme changes to the household and Brian and the children living at home will be taken care of and remain in the home where they are cared for by Gloria Ramos and the wonderful team at the house who have been in place for many years helping take care of the family," they continued.
"Brian will be able to enjoy all of his family and friends and continue to work on current projects as well as participate in any activities he chooses," the family concluded.
Court documents filed state that Wilson is "easily distracted, often even when aware of surroundings, and its purpose," and he "often makes spontaneous irrelevant or incoherent utterances and has [a] very short attention span and while unintentionally disruptive, is frequently unable to maintain decorum appropriate to the situation."
As a result, the filing adds, "Mr. Wilson is unable to properly provide for his own personal needs for physical health, food, clothing, or shelter."
A hearing is currently scheduled for April 26, 2024, however, Wilson will not be able to attend "because of medical inability."
Brian Wilson has previously been diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder and bipolar disorder.
Earlier this week it was reported that Wilson is planning to release his lost country album, Cows in the Pasture, which he recorded back in 1970. The sought after recording is scheduled for some time in 2025.
