Bruce Springsteen is taking President Donald Trump to task with a new, eviscerating anti-Trump anthem, “That’s What Makes Us Great”. The title is a play on Trump’s ubiquitous campaign phrase “Make America Great Again”.
Presumably, it’s in response to Trump playing “Born in the U.S.A.” during his rallies without express permission – but Springsteen has also gone on record to call the president a “moron”, and decry his travel ban as “fundamentally un-American”. (He was also photographed yachting recently with former president Obama.)
The song is a collaboration between Springsteen and Houserockers frontman Joe Grushecky. “I had this song, and Bruce and I had been talking,” Grushecky told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “I sent it to him and he liked it. I said, ‘What do you think about singing on it?’ He gave it the Bruce treatment.”
The lyrics put the president and his antics directly in its crosshairs. Springsteen sings, “Don’t tell me a lie / And sell it as a fact / I’ve been down that road before / And I ain’t going back,” and “Don’t you brag to me / That you never read a book / I never put my faith / In a con man and his crooks.”
