Canada’s The Weeknd came up empty at Sunday night’s Soul Train Awards, losing both Best R&B/Soul Male Artist and Album of the Year to Bruno Mars.
“Come Closer” by Wizkid featuring Drake lost Best Dance Performance to Mars.
Mars also picked up Video of the Year (for "24K Magic”) and Song of the Year (“That's What I Like”). The singer, who did not attend the show because he's on tour overseas, had six nominations.
Solange Knowles, who led the way with seven nominations, earned only one.
SZA won two – Best New Artist and Best R&B/Soul Female Artist.
Host Erykah Badu kicked things off by taking a knee as a tribute to NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick. "Kap we appreciate you,” she said, "for giving up your life, your dream, for your belief in us.”
Performers included Kirk Franklin, Tamar Braxton, Keyshia Cole and Faith Evans.
Toni Braxton was honoured with the Soul Train Legend Award and Sisters With Voices were presented with the Soul Train Lady of Soul Award.
