BTS member j-hope has been discharged from the South Korean military today (October 17), after serving his 18 months of mandatory service in Wonju, Gangwon province.
Wearing a standard military uniform and a black beret, a smiling j-hope (real name Jung Ho-seok) greeted the 100 or so excited fans waiting outside the gates.
Also in attendance was fellow BTS member Jin, who held the microphone for j-hope during his speech to the public.
“First of all, thank you so much. I completed my service in good health. I’m really grateful,” j-hope said to the crowd.
“During my one year and six months of military life, I served as an instructor, so I went on many marches," he continued. "Every time, I saw many citizens of Wonju. I want to convey my gratitude to the citizens of Wonju who always greeted me and supported me. It was very touching.”
“What I really felt over the past one year and six months is the immense dedication and hard work of the soldiers who protect our country," he added. "They are doing so much for the nation. I feel as if it will be meaningful to give those people warm interest and love.”
According to Reuters, j-hope's release caused shares in HYBE, the entertainment company behind BTS, rose 7% in early afternoon trade versus a flat wider market.
j-hope is the second member of BTS to complete their military service. Jin was released from his duty this past June.
The remaining four members - RM, V, Jimin and Jung Kook - began their service in December 2023 and are expected to be released throughout 2025, ahead of what is expected to be a full-on BTS reuinion.
