Toronto’s Rogers Centre, which has hosted concerts by the world’s biggest acts, is facing demolition.
The Globe and Mail reported Friday that Rogers Communications and Brookfield Asset Management have a plan to tear down the stadium and redevelop the space next to the CN Tower.
A new natural grass baseball-focused stadium for the Toronto Blue Jays would be built on a portion of the land or at another site closer to Lake Ontario, according to the newspaper’s sources.
The two companies have not commented on the report.
Originally named Skydome, the stadium with a retractable roof opened in June 1989 with a show that included a performance by Glass Tiger.
In addition to being the home of the Jays and Toronto Argonauts (and, at one time, the Toronto Raptors), the venue hosted concerts by U2, The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi, Guns ’N Roses, Coldplay and Madonna.
BTS was scheduled to do a pair of sold-out shows at Rogers Centre earlier this year.
The stadium appears in Madonna’s 1991 documentary Truth or Dare and is currently featured in the Netflix special Shawn Mendes: Live In Concert.
