English new wave band A Flock of Seagulls, who soared to the top of the charts in 1982 with “I Ran,” is hitting the road this summer with a Canadian musician in the line-up.
Gordon Deppe, frontman for ‘80s band Spoons, is the new guitarist for A Flock of Seagulls and founding vocalist Mike Score.
Deppe, who hails from Ontario, continues to do live shows with Spoons, which had hits like “Romantic Traffic,” “Tell No Lies” and “Nova Heart.”
A Flock of Seagulls is appearing July 10 in Belleville, July 11 in Peterborough and July 12 in London, Ont.
Then, Deppe and the band will join the Lost ‘80s Live show (which includes Montreal’s Men Without Hats) to criss-cross North America and stop at Vancouver’s PNE on Aug. 26 and Place Bell in Laval, QC on Sept. 28.
The synth group released five studio albums between 1982 and 1995 and won a Grammy in 1983 for “D.N.A.”
Last month, Score said he reunited with original members Paul Reynolds, Frank Maudsley and Ali Score to record an album titled Ascension, which features nine of their hits recorded with the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra as well as a new song. It’s due to come out June 29.
Deppe isn’t the first Canadian musician to join another band. Toronto’s Phil X replaced Richie Sambora as Bon Jovi’s guitarist in 2013 and Lawrence Gowan took over from Dennis DeYoung as lead singer of Styx in 1999.
