Tory Lanez performed Saturday at the Coachella music festival in California— only days after being arrested in Florida.
The Canadian rapper, whose real name is Daystar Shemuel Peterson, was pulled over by police in Miramar on April 12 for having an expired dealer’s tag on his 2014 Rolls-Royce. Officers then discovered the 24-year-old Toronto native did not have a license allowing him to drive in the U.S.
A search of the vehicle allegedly turned up less than 20 grams of marijuana in the glove compartment and a loaded gun in the centre console.
Lanez was arrested at the scene and faces charges of marijuana possession, carrying a concealed firearm, operating a vehicle without a valid license or insurance, and failing to register a motor vehicle.
The gun charge comes with a maximum of up to five years in prison.
The Juno-nominated rap star was released from a Broward County jail on April 13 on a $1,000 USD bond.
“Believe none of what you hear and only half of what you see. don't let the internet fool you,” Lanez tweeted. “The truth prevails.”
On Instagram, he posted a similar message: “believe none of what you hear and only half of what you see. Don't fall behind the hype of the net.” In a separate post, he wrote only “misunderstood.”
A lawyer for Lanez said the rapper will be “fully exonerated once all the facts come to light.”
Lanez performs at Coachella again next week and then heads out on tour with Future in May. He’ll play at home in Toronto on May 16 and will do shows in Edmonton on June 7 and Vancouver on June 9.
