Neil Young has remembered Gord Downie as “a true Canadian artist.”
The 71-year-old icon paid tribute to The Tragically Hip frontman in a Facebook post that included a hand-drawn red maple leaf.
Downie died Tuesday after battling brain cancer. He was 53.
“You have always been a true Canadian artist. My condolences to your whole family and all of Canada,” Young wrote. “What a great gift of music you have left here for us all.”
Also taking to social media to honour Downie was Toronto rap star Drake.
“Rest In Peace legend,” read the caption on an Instagram photo of the two at a Raptors game. “So glad we got to meet and have this conversation. You will be forever treasured by this country and missed by the world.”
A post on Nickelback's Twitter account read: "Husband, father, poet, activist, icon & fearless performer... Thank you for inspiring so many w/ a life well-lived."
Singer Jann Arden tweeted only one word: "Gord."
