Canadian music artist Lorraine Segato will be at the CCMAs in Hamilton, Ont. on Sunday to debut a new version of “Rise Up,” the signature hit by her former band Parachute Club.
Seventeen Canadian country artists came together, as The Common Cause Collective, to bring new life to a song with a message that continues to resonate 35 years after it was first recorded.
Among the artists lending their voices are Gord Bamford, Meghan Patrick, Tim Hicks, Kira Isabella, Brett Kissel, Jess Moskaluke, Jason McCoy and The Washboard Union.
The original “Rise Up,” produced by Daniel Lanois, appeared on Parachute Club’s 1983 self-titled debut album. A Top 10 hit in Canada, it was named Single of the Year at the Juno Awards in 1984.
“In remaking this song, we are honouring and celebrating another generation of social justice activists and encouraging and engaging the youth who are shaping the future,” Segato explained, in a release.
“The song first signaled a call for equality and empowerment in 1983. Today its message is as relevant as it was 35 years ago.”
Proceeds from the “Rise Up Redux," which is available now, will go to several charities via the Toronto Foundation: Canadian Roots Youth Reconciliation, Institute for Change Leaders, ECOJUSTICE, and the Sherbourne Health Centre - Supporting Our Youth.
The all-star country recording of “Rise Up” is one of two new versions that celebrate the anthem’s anniversary.
