Several Canadian musicians are going ahead with plans to perform concerts this weekend in the U.S., where COVID-19 is surging.
The Guess Who, including Canada's Garry Peterson, Derek Sharp and Leonard Shaw, and Smash Mouth, whose members include Canada’s Paul De Lisle, are scheduled to perform at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota.
The state has reported nearly 9,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 135 deaths.
According to the venue’s website, signs are in place to remind fans to practice social distancing and wear face masks. Hand sanitizer stations are located throughout the site and “the frequency of cleaning and sanitizing will be increased in public spaces with an emphasis on frequent contact surfaces.”
On The Guess Who’s Facebook page, not all fans believe it’s time for the band to return to the stage. “Don’t think that’s smart,” commented one. Another shared: “Luv ya but money ain’t everything boys and maybe rethink who else can be hurt in the long run.”
A comment attributed to the band downplays concerns. “The stage at the Buffalo Chip is HUGE, like we’ll [have] no problem social distancing from each other.”
Peterson, 75, is the only original member of The Guess Who in this version of the band, which is scheduled to hit the stage Saturday night.
Smash Mouth is due to perform Sunday night and the line-up includes sets by Molly Hatchett, Trapt, Night Ranger, Buckcherry, 38 Special and Quiet Riot. Other rally events include the "Lingerie Fighting Championships."
