Canadian artists among those protesting U.S. president Donald Trump’s executive order banning refugees from seven predominantly Muslim countries.
“This is absolute madness and completely against American interest,” tweeted Arcade Fire singer Win Butler.
The Weeknd, the son of Ethiopian migrants to Canada, retweeted prime minister Justin Trudeau, who wrote: “Those fleeing persecution, terror & war, Canadians will welcome you, regardless of your faith. Diversity is our strength.”
Jann Arden took to Twitter to ask Trump: “How can you NOT help refugees? Most of your terror comes from YOUR heart.” EDM star deadmau5 suggested: “Guess you better send Melania back too.”
Tegan and Sara said on Twitter that they felt “outraged” and “terrified” by what was going on in the U.S.
Claiming he wants to protect the U.S. from terrorism, Trump’s immigration ban targets Iran, Iraq, Syria, Sudan, Yemen, Libya and Somalia. No immigrants from these countries have been responsible for a fatal terrorist attack in the U.S.
Canadian stars were not alone in expressing outrage.
Barbados-born Rihanna didn’t hold back. “America is being ruined right before our eyes! What an immoral pig you have to be to implement such BS!!”
Former Fifth Harmony singer Camila Cabello took to Twitter to call the ban “dehumanizing beyond words… THIS IS NOT WHO WE ARE.”
Pop singer Troye Sivan shared: “My heart is breaking today for the Muslim community around the world.”
“The ban on refugees is disgraceful,” tweeted Mark Hoppus of blink182. “Please refer to the Statue of Liberty.”
Josh Groban shared: “To those in gov towing the line for a president you know is wrong: ask yourself ‘at what cost?’. This isn't who we are and you know it.”
Miley Cyrus was also among the stars who tweeted support for immigrants.
Singer Nancy Sinatra, whose grandparents were Italian migrants to America, said she is ashamed of Trump. “I dread what each new day will bring,” she tweeted.
