Carly Pearce and Ashley McBryde each won their first Grammy on Sunday thanks to their collaboration “Never Wanted to be That Girl.”
“I did not expect this,” Pearce said. "I’ve known Ashley for a long time and I just wanted to sing a song with her and we wrote this song and it has just transcended so many of my wildest dreams. Real music. Real country music.
“This is my first nomination, so I was not expecting this.”
McBryde added “we did it together” before exclaiming “Holy s**t!”
The Grammy for Best Country Song – which is awarded to the songwriters – went to Cody Johnson’s “’Til You Can’t,” penned by Matt Rogers and Ben Stennis.
Willie Nelson’s “Live Forever” was named Best Country Solo Performance and, later, his A Beautiful Time won the Grammy for Best Country Album.
