Chappel Roan stole the show at the Governor's Ball in New York City, where she revealed she turned down a performance at the request of the White House.
Emerging from a giant apple bong dressed as the Statue of Liberty, or as she calls her, “the biggest queen of all,” the 26-year-old singer-songwriter explained what it would take for her to make an appearance.
“As a response to the White House, who asked me to perform for Pride, we want liberty, justice and freedom for all," she said. "When you do that, that’s when I’ll come.”
Roan used her set as an opportunity to address the tens of thousands in attendance about causes that mattered to her.
“I am in drag of the biggest queen of all, but in case you had forgotten what’s etched on my pretty little toes, ‘Give me your tired, your poor; your huddled masses yearning to breath free,'" she added. "That means freedom in trans rights, freedom in women’s rights… and it especially means freedom for all oppressed people in occupied territories."
Since the release of her latest single "Good Luck, Babe!" and opening up Olivia Rodrigo's North American tour, Roan has become one of the year's brightest rising stars, helping fill a gap in pop music's landscape that has seen it monopolized by a handful of artists.
