Cher, Ozzy Osbourne, Mary J. Blige and Dave Matthews Band have been selected as this year's inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Foreigner, Peter Frampton, Kool & The Gang and A Tribe Called Quest are also being inducted under the Performer Category, which recognizes "artists who have created music whose originality, impact, and influence has changed the course of rock and roll."
The announcement was made last night (April 21) on American Idol's "Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Night" episode featuring Gene Simmons of KISS, with host Ryan Seacrest and judge Lionel Richie revealing the names.
Ozzy Osbourne reacted to the news, telling Billboard, "Not bad for a guy who was fired from his last band.” Adding, it feels more special than his nomination with Black Sabbath "because my solo career, it’s been a much larger part of my overall music career as a whole.”
Cher, Foreigner, Peter Frampton and Kool & the Gang were first time ballots. In order to be eligible for induction, the artist or band must have released its first commercial recording at least 25 years prior to the year of nomination.
In addition to the performer inductions, the Hall will also honour the late Jimmy Buffett, MC5, Dionne Warwick and Norman Whitfield with the Musical Excellence Award, which is given to "artists, musicians, songwriters and producers whose originality and influence creating music have had a dramatic impact on music."
Alexis Korner, John Mayall and Big Mama Thornton will receive the Musical Influence Award for "music and performance style [that] have directly influenced, inspired, and evolved rock and roll and music impacting youth culture."
And finally, Suzanne de Passe will receive the Ahmet Ertegun Award as a "non-performing industry professional who's had a major influence on the growth of the art form."
Meanwhile, fans of bands such as Jane's Addiction, Lenny Kravitz and Oasis have sounded off after they didn't make the cut. Though Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher definitely maybe doesn't care about the snub.
The 2024 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction airs love on Saturday, October 19 on Disney+. It will then air on ABC at a later date.
