Coldplay frontman Chris Martin’s 14-year-old daughter Apple publicly chided her famous mother this week for posting her picture on Instagram.
On Monday, Gwyneth Paltrow shared a selfie from a mother-daughter ski trip that she captioned with emojis of an apple, a skier and a heart. Apple is wearing ski goggles that cover the top half of her face.
In the comments, Apple wrote: “Mom we have discussed this. You may not post anything without my consent.”
Paltrow replied: “You can’t even see your face!”
The exchange – which may be in jest – sparked debate on social media about the privacy rights of teenagers and the offspring of celebrities.
Apple’s Instagram account is set to private and neither Paltrow or her ex-husband typically share photos of her or their son Moses, almost 13, on their social media accounts.
“Gwyneth has no right to post photos of her children without their consent,” one person commented. Another opined: “You are famous but your daughter [has] the right to be totally anonymous and you are not respecting her decision.”
Others sided with Paltrow. “Come on Apple, your mom is proud of you, let her show off,” wrote one person. Someone else commented: “Get over yourself, she’s just a proud Mommy.”
One man was firm in his position. “It’s absurd that you have to justify yourself to your 14 yr old daughter whom I presume is living under your roof and spending your money. Show some respect, Apple.”
The conversation is raging in the same week that Apple’s father was granted a temporary restraining order keeping an alleged stalker 100 yards away from him, Apple and Moses.
According to The Blast, Martin alleges the woman – who claims to be in a relationship with him – has sent letters referencing his children and has shown up at his home.
A hearing for a permanent restraining order is scheduled for next month.
