Let The Canary Sing, a new documentary exploring the remarkable life and career of '80s pop superstar Cyndi Lauper, will receive an exclusive release via Paramount+ on June 4.
Directed by Emmy Award winner Alison Ellwood (The Go-Go's, Laurel Canyon), Let The Canary Sing "chronicles Lauper’s meteoric ascent to stardom and her profound impact on generations through her music, ever-evolving punk style, unwavering feminism and tireless advocacy. The documentary takes the audience on an engaging exploration of a renowned and pioneering artist who has left a remarkable legacy with her art."
With her inimitable, rainbowed look and larger-than-life personality, Lauper quickly became an icon of her era with the release of her 1983 debut album, She's So Unusual, and massive hits like “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” "Time After Time" and "True Colors."
Let The Canary Sing features appearances by friends and fans like fellow '80s pop hero Boy George and legendary R&B singer Patti LaBelle.
“Over the years I’ve been asked to do a documentary about my life and work, but it never felt like the right time. Until now," Lauper says in a statement. "When I first met Alison Ellwood, I knew right away I could trust her to tell my story honestly, which was incredibly important to me, and she succeeded in that. I'd like to thank Alison, the producers, and all of the amazing documentary participants who agreed to be interviewed!”
