The short list for this year’s Polaris Music Prize was unveiled Tuesday.
Daniel Caesar’s acclaimed Freudian is among the albums nominated for the prestigious award, which recognizes the best Canadian album of the year.
The 23-year-old singer's debut album, which was released in 2017, was nominated as Best R&B Album at the Grammys and won R&B/Soul Recording of the Year at the Juno Awards.
Also short-listed are: Alvvays - Antisocialites; Jean-Michel Blais - Dans ma main; Jeremy Dutcher - Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa; Pierre Kwenders - MAKANDA at the End of Space, the Beginning of Time; Hubert Lenoir - Darlène; Partner - In Search Of Lost Time; Snotty Nose Rez Kids - The Average Savage; U.S. Girls - In A Poem Unlimited; and Weaves - Wide Open.
The Polaris winner, who will be announced on Sept. 17 in Toronto, will receive a $50,000 cash prize. Runners-up will each receive $3,000.
The Polaris Music Prize finalists are chosen by a group of music industry insiders and journalists and based “solely on artistic merit, without consideration for genre or record sales.”
Last year's winning album was La Papessa by Lido Pimienta.
