Daryl Dragon, best known as one-half of pop music duo Captain & Tennille, died Tuesday in Arizona at 76.
“He was a brilliant musician with many friends who loved him greatly,” his ex-wife and musical partner Toni Tennille said in a statement. “I was at my most creative in my life when I was with him.”
According to a spokesperson, Dragon died of renal failure.
Dragon earned the “Captain” nickname while playing keyboards for the Beach Boys in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. He and Tennille released their debut album in 1975 and found success with the title track, “Love Will Keep Us Together.” The song topped the charts and won a Grammy for Record of the Year.
Other hits for the duo included “The Way I Want to Touch You,” “Muskrat Love” and “Do That to Me One More Time.”
Captain & Tennille also had a variety show that lasted one season and spawned regular specials.
Dragon and Tennille divorced in 2014.
