Dave Grohl has said he could never join Canadian rock band Rush in place of the band's iconic, and happily retired, drummer Neil Peart.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and former Nirvana drummer told Rolling Stone that if Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson were to forge ahead without Peart, he is most certainly not the right man for the job.
Grohl was asked how he'd react to an offer from Lee and Lifeson.
"I would say, 'I'm not physically or musically capable, but thanks for the offer,'" Grohl said. "Neil Peart, that's a whole other animal. I know the arrangements, but I'm like [White Stripes drummer] Meg White to Neil Peart. And she's one of my favourite drummers! She's my daughter's favourite drummer, too."
Grohl and Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins are massive Rush fans. The pair inducted the prog rock legends into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013. Later that same evening, Rush jammed onstage with Foo Fighters. Grohl played guitar for most of the festivities.
Rolling Stone's Rush question wasn't totally serious, but it didn't come out of nowhere. Since Rush retired in 2018, Lee and Lifeson have been busy with other projects. Both have insisted separately that they intend to continue their musical careers, though probably not as Rush.
About a year ago, the Internet was abuzz with rumors Lee and Lifeson were planning to start a new project together. A spokeswoman for the band, however, shot down those rumours.
Grohl and Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic collaborated with Paul McCartney for Nirvana's own Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction in 2014. Grohl also has a side project with Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones and Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme called Them Crooked Vultures.
