A painting by the late David Bowie that was purchased for $5 at a donation centre in the Northern Ontario town of South River sold Thursday for $108,120.
Toronto’s Cowley Abbott received more than 50 bids for the painting during its online auction, according to release. The buyer's identity was not disclosed.
The piece, titled D Head XLVI and signed on the back, was estimated to fetch between $9,000 and $12,000.
Measuring 24 cm x 19 cm, it is an “acrylic and computer collage on canvas” dated 1997. Cowley Abbott said it confirmed with a Bowie art and signature specialist in the UK that the painting is authentic.
Bowie, who died in 2016, created some 45 works on canvas between 1994 and 1997 as part of a series he titled Dead Heads, or D Heads.
A painting from the series sold in 2016 for about $39,000 in the UK.
