David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” has been given new life on its 50th anniversary.
A new video for the song, remixed by Bowie’s longtime producer Tony Visconti, was revealed on Saturday – the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing – at a NASA event in Washington.
“The video features never before released footage of David Bowie performing ‘Space Oddity’ at his 50th birthday concert at Madison Square Garden in 1997,” read a description on the late singer’s official website.
Directed by Tim Pope, it uses footage directed and filmed by Eduaord Lock, the founder and choreographer of Montreal’s La La La Human Steps, for use on Bowie’s 1990 Sound & Vision tour.
“Space Oddity” was released on July 11, 1969 ahead of the Apollo 11 mission. It was famously covered in 2013 by Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield. A video for his version has been viewed more than 43 million times.
Bowie died in 2016 at 69.
