Canada’s David Foster, a hitmaker for stars like Celine Dion and Whitney Houston, performed for U.S. president Donald Trump on Saturday night in Florida.
The 67-year-old producer/composer hosted a fundraiser at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort.
At one point in the evening, he invited former Canadian prime minister Brian Mulroney on stage for a rendition of “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling.”
On social media, Foster is taking heat for entertaining America’s mentally unstable president.
“#DavidFosterShameOnYou,” tweeted Montreal songwriter Melody Rachel.
Toronto’s Andrea Valentini described it as “a real disappointment” while Pam Shaw of B.C. tweeted that Foster had “zero integrity … zero courage.” Another tweeted: “There goes my respect for David Foster.”
Murray S. Rowe of Toronto was more direct. “Shame @officialdfoster SHAME!!!!,” he tweeted. “You’re an embarrassment to Canada.”
Foster and Trump have been friends for years but Foster, a native of B.C., reportedly supported Hillary Clinton in the presidential election.
Earlier this year, Foster took to social media to deny reports he would be participating in Trump’s inauguration.
“For the record, I was asked to participate in the upcoming inauguration some time ago and I politely declined,” he wrote. “Any news outlet that is reporting otherwise is misinformed.”
