Canadian artists deadmau5 and Justin Bieber have unclaimed bank balances waiting for them, according to a Bank of Canada database.
When a Canadian bank account has been inactive for 10 years, the funds are transferred to the Bank of Canada and held for 30 years (for balances up to $1,000) or 100 years (for balances over $1,000).
According to the Bank of Canada, there was $888 million in unclaimed balances at the end of 2019.
deadmau5, who once lived in a penthouse of a condo building at Church and Dundas Streets in Toronto, has $2,850.64 waiting for him from a TD Bank account.
Bieber can claim $5.74 from a CIBC account in Stratford, Ont., where he grew up. The funds date back to when the singer lived with mom Pattie Mallette in an apartment building on Kappele Circle.
“Four Strong Winds” singer Ian Tyson has an unclaimed balance of $280.86 from a TD Bank account in Toronto.
While it’s not certain to be the former Barenaked Ladies singer, a “Steven Page” is listed as the owner of $176.56 from a TD Bank branch at Dundas and Ossington in Toronto.
According to the Bank of Canada, two organizations with ties to music artists are also entitled to unclaimed balances – the Céline Dion International Fan Club has $30.18 and the David Foster Foundation Golf Classic in the composer’s native Victoria has $122.26.
