Demi Lovato is set to receive an award for her advocacy in the mental health field. On Friday (Mar. 3), it was announced that the pop star will be one of the few honorees at The Jane and Terry Semel Institute's biannual Open Minds Gala on March 22 at the Beverly Hilton.
During the Lisa Kurdrow-hosted event, which recognizes folks who raise awareness and reduce the stigma of mental health issues, the singer will be honoured with the Artistic Award of Courage title. Lovato has been a longtime advocate for the cause, documenting her own battle with bipolar disorder in her New York Times best-seller "Staying Strong: 365 Days."
Most recently, Lovato premiered a brand-new documentary surrounding the struggle called Beyond Silence. In the film, Demi follows three different people and their battles with the illness.
Additional honorees for the event include East West Bancorp former president/COO Julia S. Gouw, who will receive the Humanitarian Award, and Dr. Kelsey Martin, dean of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, who will accept the Visionary Award. The gala will also feature a performance from Glee star Chord Overstreet.
UCLA's Jane and Terry Semel Institute's for Neuroscience and Human Behavior has served as a longtime resource for the cause. In fact, they've been providing care for folks who suffer from chronic psychiatric and neurological diseases since 1961.
